"Sea and Sky: A Monochrome Journey" presents a photographic series by Gordon Jenkinson, Grand Prize Winner of our Black & White photography competition. In this solo exhibition, Gordon turns his painter's eye to the coast — capturing light, stillness, and quiet drama across ten monochrome works

Artist statement

"My photography grows from a lifelong passion for art. I now explore the landscape through the medium of photography rather than paint. The coast has always been central to my practice — particularly Belhaven a place where light, sky and weather change upon each visit over many years observing its beauty.

I approach photography with a painter’s eye, drawn to composition, structure and natural spaces. Whether capturing a passing storm, the stillness of balanced stones, or the movement of clouds, I aim to create images that feel both familiar and slightly otherworldly.

Now retired, I have the freedom to explore both at home and abroad in search of locations that inspire me to be a better photographer always learning wherever I go."

About the Artist

Gordon Jenkinson is a Scottish artist and former art tutor whose creative practice spans more than three decades. Trained in illustration and design, he taught with Dunbar Art Club and East Lothian Council’s adult education programme for many years, alongside a decade working with East Lothian Council’s Museums Service.

Primarily an artist, he has held numerous solo art exhibitions and received awards for his paintings. His panoramic photography has also been exhibited in two very successful local solo shows, reflecting his long-standing interest in visual storytelling and landscape.

Now retired, Gordon has shifted his creative focus to Fine Art photography, creating studies across many genres including astrophotography, macro, monochrome and nature.
