"Following a Tree" presents a meditative photographic series by Marian Plaino, Grand Prize Winner of our Stone & Stories photography competition. In this solo exhibition, Plaino shifts his lens from the human stories of urban architecture to the quiet transformations of a single tree across seasons and time.
Artist statement
This project follows the same tree across different seasons and moments in time. While we are used to “following” people, here the attention shifts toward nature, observing how a constant presence is transformed by light, weather, and the passage of time.
By returning repeatedly to the same place, the work explores transformation within continuity. The surrounding landscape evolves — roads change, fields shift, and time moves forward — yet the tree remains, both familiar and different with each encounter.
The series does not simply document a tree, but observes how time becomes visible through subtle variations. Each image forms part of a dialogue between permanence and change, between what remains and what disappears.
Through repetition, the familiar is seen again, inviting the viewer to slow down and look more carefully at what appears unchanged.
About the Artist
Marian Plaino is a Romanian photographer who began his photographic journey in 1997. His work has evolved from travel documentation into a broader exploration of portraiture, street life, and the relationship between people and their environment.
Working primarily with natural light and unposed moments, he focuses on capturing authentic situations rather than constructed scenes. His approach is based on observation, patience, and the search for meaningful presence within ordinary contexts.
Since 2016, his work has received over 750 awards in international competitions across more than 60 countries, including multiple trophies and “Best Author” distinctions. Recent recognitions include an Honorable Mention at the Siena International Photo Awards, a Gold Medal at the International Photography Awards, finalist at the Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest, and shortlist at the Sony World Photography Awards.
His photographs have been published in Photo Magazine France, GEO Germany, National Geographic Traveller UK, Digital Photo Germany, and The Times.
